Remembering Today
SSM.Henry Newman Hutchinson MM
Henry Hutchinson had been a yeoman farmer in civilian life, had joined A squadron as a Trooper and risen by his ability and courage to the rank of Squadron Sergeant-Major.
By 1945 he was one of the Regiments veterans and one of the few remaining originals of A Squadron.
Described as a ‘vigorous and effective soldier whose unfailing good humour made him popular with everyone…’, he had won the Military Medal for great gallantry in rescuing wounded tank-crews at Alamein.
On 28th March 1945, A Squadron was sent to support the Gordon Highlanders in actions around the town of Isselburg, Germany.
Either Sgt.Hutchinson stood on a mine in a verge while parking the Squadron tanks, or the tank of Captain Neville Fearn, whos tank he was standing beside, hit a mine, but Sgt.Hutchinson was killed by the explosion and Captain Fearn wounded.
S.S.M. Hutchinson is buried in Reichswald Park Cemetery, Germany.
